How much room does CALC4CAD take on the hard drive?

CALC4CAD takes up about 2 MB of hard disk space on your computer.

With what versions of AutoCAD will CALC4CAD communicate?

CALC4CAD 4.1 will work with AutoCAD R14 thru 2005 and AutoCAD LT98 thru LT2005 on Windows 95 or newer. CALC4CAD 2.3 will work with AutoCAD R11 thru R13 and AutoCAD LT2.0 thru LT97 on Windows 3.1 or newer.

How many memory registers does CALC4CAD have available to use?

CALC4CAD has 10 memory registers that are saved to the hard drive.

Can CALC4CAD draw fasteners?

CALC4CAD draws 2D fasteners in both English and Metric units. Top and side views are available for all fasteners and isometric views can be drawn for hex and socket heads.

Can CALC4CAD draw a graph?

Given an equation, the starting and ending X values and the number of steps between the starting and ending X values, CALC4CAD calculates a series of points which are then connected with a polyline in AutoCAD.

Can CALC4CAD create a hole chart?

The user preselects the circles that are to be used in the chart. CALC4CAD puts the holes in order by size, numbers them on the screen and builds a chart that is inserted back into the drawing as a block. A separate text file of the chart is also made for external use.

Can CALC4CAD create an isometric drawing?

The user preselects lines, circles, arcs and simple polylines that are all in the same plane and CALC4CAD creates a top, left or right isometric view of the objects. The process is repeated for the other views of the drawing and then the sides are positioned together to form the isometric. It may be necessary to draw additional objects or move some of the drawn objects around to get the proper look for the isometric.

Can CALC4CAD create gears and sprockets?

CALC4CAD draws 2D English and Metric gears and English sprockets.

Can CALC4CAD create objects in Paper Space?

No. CALC4CAD is designed to work in Model Space only.

Can CALC4CAD create 3D or solid objects?

No. CALC4CAD will only create objects that are 2D.

When I create a fastener or gear with CALC4CAD, many messages appear on the AutoCAD command line. Is this normal?

Yes. CALC4CAD creates a script file of all the steps necessary to draw a gear or fastener and then sends the script file to AutoCAD. Each line of the script file is interpreted by AutoCAD just as if you had typed it yourself.

Sometimes an error happens when CALC4CAD is sending a fastener or gear and afterward dialog boxes do not work in AutoCAD. Is this normal?

Yes, unfortunately. CALC4CAD was unable to send the entire script file which includes resetting several AutoCAD system variables that are used. The main items that may be changed are the current layer, the object snap setting and the FILEDIA system variable. The user can easily reset the current layer and the object snap settings but users may never have seen FILEDIA before. The FILEDIA system variable is set to "1" if dialog boxes will be used and set to "0" if dialog boxes are disabled and only the command line will take input. It is necessary for CALC4CAD to set this value to "0" and the user will have to reset it to "1" after an error if the user wants to see dialog boxes.

How do I remove CALC4CAD from my computer?

CALC4CAD does not change any system files so all that is necessary to unistall CALC4CAD is to delete the files from the CALC4CAD directory or use the uninstall feature on the Windows control panel.

Can CALC4CAD perform simple beam analysis?

Yes. The beam analysis uses classical equations to find the stress and deflection of a beam with a simple load. Choose from simple, fixed, cantilever or mixed beams and select a cross section from i-beam to round tube. Enter the dimensions for the beam and the load and the stress and deflection are calculated.

Can CALC4CAD calculate the belt length over three pulleys?

Yes. Enter the X and Y locations and pulley diameters and the length of the belt around that system is calculated. The system can be back-solved for any of the variables by entering a belt length and leaving one of the variables blank. The blank variable is calculated and a diagram of the system is drawn.

Can CALC4CAD calculate a straight line through data points?

Yes. The curve fitting utility takes X and Y data that may be collected from an experiment or other source, and fits a straight line or curve through the points. Enter the X and Y data into the grid and select first, second or third order equation. The equation of the line will appear in the text box at the bottom of the screen. A graph will be drawn showing the data points as red circles and the calculated line in blue. The calculated Y values and percent error will be displayed in the grid along with the original data.

Can CALC4CAD draw circular clips or retaining rings?

CALC4CAD draws 2D internal, external and E-clip circular clips in English and Metric units.

How do I preselect objects in AutoCAD?

While AutoCAD is waiting for the next command, choose items to work with on the screen by selecting one at a time or with a selection box. After the objects are selected, there will be blue boxes on the chosen items. Preselected objects look like this in AutoCAD.

How do I use the beam analysis tool?

Select the beam and loading for the beam from the list boxes. Select the material and section and enter values into the beam and section text boxes. Press the Solve button to see the results. The entered values can be changed to see how they effect the results. Any of the screens can be printed for future reference.

How do I use the belt length analysis tool?

The belt length tool calculates the length of a belt around three pulleys. Enter the locations and sizes of the three pulleys and press Solve to see the belt length. CALC4CAD calculates the value in the list that is left blank. If you know the belt length that you would like to use, fill that value in and leave one of the other values blank and CALC4CAD will back solve for that value. Any of the screens can be printed for future reference.

How do I use the curve fitting analysis tool?

Enter X and Y data that was collected in an experiment or from some other source, select the order for the line and press Solve. CALC4CAD will calculate the best straight line (first order) through those points or the best curve for second and third order equations. The equation is displayed on the screen and it can be copied to the clipboard and entered into the graphing utility in CALC4CAD and sent to AutoCAD. Any of the screens can be printed for future reference.

How are the isometric hex bolts named?

The bolt thread is pointing in the direction of the name, i.e. ISO N is pointing north.
